Car Insurance Requirements for U.S. States
In the United States, legislating auto insurance is the state governments responsibility. This means that aside from regulating insurance companies, each state also regulates their own drivers as well as drivers entering their state. One of the more important roles the state government will play will be setting the minimum amount of liability required by drivers within that state. Since each state is different, naturally each state will enact different minimum liability limits.
For example, states such as Maine and Alaska, require as much as $50,000 coverage of bodily injury per person, $100,000 for injury to all persons in an accident and $25,000 for property damage (notated as 50/100/25). While other state governments such as Louisiana and Florida require only $10,000 for bodily injury, $20,000 for all persons involved in the accident and $10,000 for property damage. Mandatory Car Insurance Coverage
The majority of states have passed legislature making driving without valid auto insurance a crime punishable by each states’ highway and traffic act. In order to ensure, drivers have valid insurance they are usually required to show their insurance slip, known as a “pink slip” when they register a new car, renew their license plate tags, in an auto collision or when pulled over by the police (at the attending officers discretion).
In order to discourage driving without insurance, many states have passed severe penalties for those caught while driving without valid auto insurance. These penalties usually result in the offender receiving a serious ticked for “Driving without Insurance” and can result in a suspension of a driver’s license and suspension of the car registration for up to six months, a fine as high as $5000, and for habitual offenders up to one year in prison.
